Guest Speaker

Darren Baker, a well-known man in town owner of Helloworld Portland came to tell us about how he is surviving in covid.  It is surviving, he thanks the government for job keeper as he was able to keep on as a staff member until Ty found another position to further his career.  He thanked members that have been popping in over the last 16 months checking in on his welfare, and reassured us that he will be sponsoring our Art Show raffle again this year.

Three words he used to describe the 16months so far Frustrating, Challenging, Stressful.
He was amazed at how fast the world shut down in 2020 when the pandemic first hit, a lot of his work in getting people back from overseas was contacted at night when the rest of the world was awake.  He gave the example of getting a person back from Zimbabwe, 3 cancelled flights and almost going around the world got the young man back to Australia.
His best year in trading was 2018 – 19 and things were looking even better for 2019-20 but came the 13% kick in the arse loss pandemic.  He is still chasing refunds for clients, as all suppliers in the travel industry operate differently.  He now says that any advice he is giving clients is good until they walk out the door.  Borders in Australia changing each week is also adding to the frustration, challenge, stress.

But Darren assures us he is here for the long haul and will see us when we are covid safe and ready the travel again.
