A very special meeting which included our AGM this evening hosted by Gordon and Kathy Page at their beautiful 'wilderness' feel property in Portland, joined by members of the Rotary Club of Portland Bay.

President Peter Taylor opened the meeting and welcomed members and guests to the meeting.

November is Rotary Foundation month

Its a good time to remember what our foundation does in the world - including in Australia - Polio vaccination needs our ongoing help until it is eradicated and we are so close. There are many projects that need our help and even a small amount on a regular basis can make a difference.
If you are interested in finding out more - speak with Peter Simons.

Feedback from President Peter Taylor

Tristate Games feedback

Tony South and Peter Taylor attended all the meetings along with Gordon Page as the meetings progressed. Acted as coordinators of the volunteers with Rotary assisting on key nights and sessions.
Approx 95 positions to fill for the activities across the multiple days of the games. Reached out to about 65 individuals mostly under 50 - Thursday nigght served meals for 400 people and Friday night 390 people served.
Kudos to Andre Wallace creating tempting foods in a makeshift kitchen - without any hassle. Nearly 16 volunteers assisted - Friday night  meals commenced at 6:30pm and finished at about 9pm with washing up done in another area. Shows - have an appropriate cause and people will be there. Also received a commitment from another person who wants to be included next year.
GAmes to be held in Portland next year and all the planning done this year means will be a breeze!
One of the local fast food outlets stated their takings were up $6000 so the local people were very pleased.

Fit for purpose - Zone regionalisation

Rotary looking for 100 clubs travelling okay who could commit to 2 years in a pilot - coaching and tansformation supported. Could not commit at this stage - However made a connection  with Colac East who are involved. Maximum100 clubs from Australia New Zealand an South Pacific clubs - Received 87 applications. Still an option to join.

Please look at these particular videos when sent out via email
1. Mark Hubblestone on Club transformation - How did we get ourselves into this membership crisis?- Seaford club SA - example of small club Lamaroo - celebrated their 40th anniversary and handed back its charter - Functioning with only 6-8 members for some time. Some 6 months later a Lions club was started with 36 members! What happened??
  • His favourite saying is "Rotary has an unhealthy obsession with meetings!"
  • Website - Got to be in love with your website - front page -prime realestate - dont have meeting information or asking people to join - show what you are doing.
  • Meet twice a month - one meeting and one projet.
3. How did we get ourselves out of the membership crisis?
7. Public image - Club in Sydney with 60 members - 25 active members  a 30 year old would look at the club and call it an 'Old farts club"
How AI can amplify can reduce your administration - so your clyb can get oout there and do yur projects. e need to look at this to remain relevant in the future.
9. Where are all the missing millenials - 28-40??

Our club has had a couple of guest speakers over the the last couple of months that we need to look at closely. Mark Anderson did a pressentation at district conference. Their club structure is not much different to ours with 35 members but they have a data base of over 500 people. He also says if you have someone attend your club - just get them involvd in projects - dont ask them to join straight away - they will run a mile.
Peter Hartley - flabergasted by the fact there are two clubs in Portland - they have 40 members with a population of over 35 thousand people. Similar in population to Warrnambool which have 4 clubs!

  • We really need to talk together with our clubs in Portland to remain relevant in our Portland community - not about clubs taking over one another but joining together in a meaningful way. Reducing the duplication.
  • Upgrading your website - will cost 3x$50 vouuchers - E-club in Adelaide with young people happy to help out - this is their fundraiser.
  • We dont want to end up like Lamaroo.
We need to get two people from each of the Portland clubs together to have open and honest conversations about our future.
