President's Message
Carolyn Millard
Great adventure speaker Jacquie Webb who endured 12 months at sea while racing around the world with "Clippers around the world" raising money for UNICEF along the way. Some boats were in it for the race, and some for the journey, but in the end once Jacquies team won a few legs, the excitement of the chase grew. The boat was over 70 feet long and could have a crew of up to 22 people.
Starting in London with ten "around the worlders" of whom only five could complete the whole trip
Others joined the voyage at different ports along the way to reinvigorate the team.
Pre-requisite was you could speak English - no boating skills required however a stringent set of assessments ruled out some - Jacquie completed three assessments/education sessions in Sydney prior to traveling to England for the last assessment to join
Left from England, past Uruguay, around Cape Horn and into the Philipines when COVID struck the world, creating a hiatus in Australia, before managing to set sail again to travel to Japan, through the Panama canal, to New York, via some icey caostline, past Scotland and into England home again- over 40 thousand kms, mostly at speed.
Learnt a lot about repairing and cleaning which was constant as they travelled; all the winches and instruments were totally taken down and rebuilt at ports, with regular repairs to sails.
Shared bunks, with everyone taking turns at every job, changing every day, with skilled employed navigators and yatchs people overseeing everything.
Sustained a few broken bones -fingers, but the biggest injury was a crush in a winch where she thought she may lose a limb.
Eating, getting dressed and using the bathroom at 45 degrees, below deck, and having to remove clothes for these activities was most challenging
The footage of the waves was extraordinary and Jacquie advised there was no real treatment for sea sickness everyone was different, some managed very well, some lasted a couple of days, some had nausea every change in weather, and some were nauseated all the time!!
Biggest experiences were travelling though two hurricanes to slingshot around the edge for speed - exhausted, with two people at times required to hold the helm, and having the mast hit by lightening which took out the water conditioner - a clever Swede managed a repair in two days!
The travel speed was too fast to fish, and two points of tie down used for each person on deck.
A costly exercise, Jacquie mortgaged her home in Portland to complete the trip and say is was worth "every cent", with memories and friendships built over the time, as well as building an inner strength to say - "I can do this" - WELL DONE!
Simone O'Brien -
"Our crusader against family violence" left for Paris to the Womens RISE conference (Real Inspiration & Sustaining Empowerment)
Promoting the openning of Orange Door in Horsham last month - free service for people experiencing or have experienced family violence.
Was in the Herald Sun today and considering going into politics as a candidate.
Last Thursday I attended The Portland Bay Ladies Probus Club for a combined Probus celebration - Over 90s ladies were acknowledged - Marj Sparrow, Frieda Grieg, Daisy Parker, Pauline Donovan ad Laurel Pedrazzi (who turned 100!) - Margaret Robinson chair of Probus South Pacific spoke.
Reminder for our "lids for kids" recycling program, and introducing coins for UNICEF recycling program (with calls a couple of times per year!)
Jacquie enjoys talking about her year long journey - so she can relive the events again!
Each port was an opportunity to showcase their boats -raise awareness, and funds too.
Not for the faint hearted - this angle is a regular!!
