Who said the weather was going to be poor on Sunday??
What a great adventure at Tae Rak (Lake Condah) Budj Bim for an environmental tour. All came prepared for all sorts of weather but no brolly required! The day started off quite mild and finished warm when the sun came out!
Such a unique place and world heritage listed as one of the worlds oldest aquacultural systems- UNESCO world heritage listed in July 2019 for its outstanding universal value. Tae Rak is a created accessible tourist site for visitors to take a peaceful walk around the southern and Eastern sides of the waterway to explore the wetlands and stoney rises right next to the historic lava flows of Budj Bim national park.
We took a guided tour with Tyson Lovett-Murray for 2 hours, listening to Tyson at the eel tank talking about the amazing journey eels have-
travelling out to sea for spawning some 4000km away in the Coral sea near New Caledonia
the parent dies and the lavae drift on tides to reach coastal water some three years later
heading up estuaries to feed and mature for 10- 20 years
Gunditjmara clans people understood the swamps and waterways and used these to create walls and channels to trap, hold and harvest the eel and as a continuous resource for their people to be nourished by.
We had a walk over some rocky ground to view some of the stoney surrounds of stone huts in which the clans people lived and sheltered. Some people were lucky enough to be part of the food chain themselves with a few picking up a few leeches on the way but I do believe on Southy was generous enough to feed them!
Finishing up with a meal at the Cafe was an experience with eel on the menu and many tasty delights at a very reasonable price. Service was great with prompt meals after ordering.
As a club event - reminder there is no meeting tomorrow.
Our adventure to Budj Bim Tae Rak Aquaculture centre.
Southys friend!
